Sleep is a necessity, we have to have sleep to survive. Like Oxygen, food and water our bodies need these things to function. Newborns can only biologically stay awake for about 45 minutes at a time. After this time they are less able to concentrate they become irritated and unsettling. As babies sleep their immune system and their memory are getting stronger and stronger, even their bones and muscles are repaired as well as their appetites, vision, emotions and even stress levels decreases.
There are so many time that sleep is put on hold for other things, especially new mothers sleeping habits. New parents tend to put off sleep until we have a chance to actually sleep. With parents having new babies in their lives they also put babies sleep on hold. A lot of times I hear "when my child is older they will be better sleepers" or new parents are even told - when your baby reaches a certain age they will learn to sleep on their own. This is so far from the truth! Sleep is so important for every age ESPECIALLY newborns as we have already talked about. It is OKAY to reach out and get help and support this is such a big part of parenting.
Today we are in the "supermom" culture where us moms have to do it all, all the time, by ourselves with no help. Put on a big smile out in public and in our facebook and instagram picutes looking and acting like everything is perfect and motherhood is the most enjoyable thing in the world. Well motherhood actually CAN BE the most enjoyable thing in the world, but you don't have to pretend. Don't be afraid to ask for help, reach out to other moms. Trust me we have all been there. Those dealing with multiple wake ups, short cat naps all day, babies waking up too early, think it is normal and they just have to live like this now and others will say "welcome to motherhood". When in fact these are the times you should reach out for support to others and even professionals. Being so tired and having a baby who is also exhausted can also cause parents to have more postpartum depression and anxiety, it happened with me, and its not just moms either. It can happen to the dads too. Be able to enjoy motherhood, it doesn't have to be like this.
We can teach our little ones good sleep habits, one of the best gifts we can give our children is the gift of independent sleep.
